Founded by Crystal DeBerry in February 2014, the number one goal of IFAM is to help restore and empower those affected by Incarceration. IFAM is a non-profit program designed to develop and address educational and biopsychosocial components of men with convictions and their families. The outreach program is notable for benefiting women who have a loved one incarcerated by alleviating environmental and psychosocial stressors.
In 2013 I sat in court with my five-day old baby, listening to a judge sentence my husband to federal prison. Instantaneously, I went numb and on autopilot mode. I could not cry! The insurmountable strength a family must possess mentally, emotionally, and physically while having a loved one incarcerated exceeds all understanding. While incarceration may seem normalized in some communities, the trauma and emotional scarring are forever. Symptoms of grief and loss, post-traumatic symptoms, depression, and anxiety are just the beginning of the tumultuous aftermath effects when a loved one is incarcerated. As a result of my personal experience paired with my social work calling, Indomitable Families was created. Indomitable’s existence is to address the mental health of those returning from prison and their families.
Incarcerated to Indomitable App
The I2I app is combining science, psychology, and behavior modification for individuals returning from incarceration. Utilizing this app in conjunction with the Incarcerated to Indomitable 12-18 month clinical program will decrease recidivism by targeting negative mental health symptoms. Mental health services must be a priority for those returning to the community from prison to decrease depression, anxiety, lack of motivation, and heal trauma! The app is currently patent pending!
